Over the past few months I've noticed a distinct change arising from interactive design, especially when it comes to blogs and other reading oriented sites. This change is an overarching clean up in these sites.

But, what does it mean? Why are websites gravitating towards what appears to be a neuvo-minimialistic design? I have a theory.

First, lets take a look at some of the changes I've seen.

• Removal of background images in favor of solid colored backings
• Subtle CSS text-shadows that give the text an almost debossed look
• A move from image based layouts to a more text content base. (Not necessarily removing images, but at least better showcasing of them with the aid of text.)
• Overall larger font sizes.

So what's changed?

Well, with the advent of mobile devices, more people are viewing these items on smaller screens, slower connections, and devices without mice. What's interesting is from this uptick in mobile use, the tablet device has become so popular, thanks largely to the work at Apple. These table devices are handy devices when you're not infront of your PC. Not only are they used for work, but I'm guessing a huge portion of their use is for personal use.

As you browse the web on the tablet and mobile devices it might feel a bit unnatural at first to hold the web in your hands. But, what if the web looked more like a book?

The Times, They are a Changin'

Well, that's precisely my theory. It's my opinion that most of the changes we've seen lately can be directly related to the huge increase in the mobile traffic on the web, specifically tablet devices. When you're screen is anywhere from 3"-10", it's still no match for you 22" monitor, so a compensation in font size is needed. The table is a great tool for reading, and when you're main objective is to read an article, it's much easier when the background and surrounding environment isn't distracting.

I expect to see parts of web design return to an almost print-style layout. Of course, the medium is much different in nature, so there will always be differences (i.e. Interactivity). I'm excited to see how the web changes of the next year. What other devices will become popular, or even be invented? And, how will they affect the status-quo of interactive design?
